VAMREG, the Veterinary Antimicrobial Medicinal products Register

The Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP) has developed the ’Veterinary Antimicrobial Medicinal products Register’ (VAMREG) to ensure the reporting and collection of data on the purchase, sale and use of antibiotic medicines for veterinary use in Belgium.

This application collects data from retailers of veterinary medicines: veterinarians holding a veterinary depot and pharmacists in charge of a public pharmacy.

This means that veterinarians holding a veterinary depot and pharmacists in charge of a public pharmacy  will have to log on to VAMREG and submit their data each quarter.

The collected data are first anonymised, then transmitted to the European Commission. The aim is to strengthen European action against antibiotic resistance in humans and animals, in line with the One Health approach, and this within the framework of article 57 of the regulation 2019/6 on veterinary medicinal products. The data will also be used for the BelVet-SAC annual national report.

The purpose of VAMREG is to provide on the one hand information on all antibiotics acquired by the veterinairan holding a veterinary depot or pharmacist in charge of a public pharmacy. And on the other hand to provide information on all antibiotics used in Belgium on the following target species: horses, aquaculture fish (Atlantic salmon, common carp, European seabass, gilthead seabream, rainbow trout and other food-producing fish), cats, dogs, fur animals (foxes, mink, etc.) and other non-food producing animals. A phased approach will be foreseen. The data collection will begin on the 1 January 2026.

For food-producing species such as cattle, pigs, veal for meat-production, rabbits, small ruminants and poultry, registration of antibiotic uses continues unchanged in SANITEL-MED.

The medicines concerned include antibiotic medicines authorised in Belgium as well as those imported from other EU member states or third countries under the ‘cascade’ provisions. Antibiotic medicines authorised for human use and magistral preparations containing antibiotics are included as well.

The following timetable is applicable for VAMREG for Veterinarians holding a veterinary depot  :

Three data input methods are available, depending on the frequency of sales/purchase/use and on the number of products.

  • Step by step, on the VAMREG website, through a form with instructions.
  • Bulk upload via a structured CSV file on the VAMREG website, to enter multiple declarations simultaneously.
  • Via Machine to Machine if your software is compatible (HTTP methods are available to developers on our REST API).

These encodings can be performed continuously once the application is launched; with a minimum registration frequency of once per quarter unless you have nothing to declare.

To reduce the workload and to prevent input errors, the application automatically shows information on Belgian medicinal products based on either their identification number (CNK) or their listed trade name.

For medicines that do not have a Belgian identification code (CNK), medicines that have not been listed as frequently used foreign medicines and for magistral preparations, the product information (active substances, dosage, package size) must be entered manually.
