Model of veterinary prescription: new mandatory information

date: 06/08/2026

Since January 2022 veterinarians have the obligation to use a new model for veterinary prescriptions. This new model is being introduced in several stages. Since 1 July 2026, the animal species must be specified on the prescription, in addition to the identification of the animal or group of animals to be treated.

On 28 January 2022, the European Regulation on medicinal products for veterinary use has entered into force. Among other things, this implies that veterinarians have the obligation to use a new model for veterinary prescriptions. This new model is being introduced in several stages.

Model of veterinary prescription
The transition period during which several models of prescriptions co-existed ended on 13 September 2025. At present, only the new three-part prescription model is valid.

At the request of veterinary organisations, a new model for veterinary prescription for non-food-producing animals will be introduced from 2027. Pending the introduction of this model, veterinarians must use the three-part model, regardless of the species of the animal being treated.

Mandatory information on the veterinary prescription
From 1 July 2026, the animal species must be specified on the veterinary prescription, in addition to the identification of the animal or group of animals to be treated.

From 1 January 2030, the indication must also be included when prescribing antimicrobial medicines (for all species).
