"Paracetamol challenge" : a reminder of the risks associated with overdosing and rules for proper use

date: 06/02/2026

Following several cases of overdose among teenagers in Belgium, linked to a challenge circulating on social media, the FAMHP reminds everyone that excessive consumption of paracetamol can have serious effects on health.

According to media reports, this "paracetamol challenge" encourages young people to ingest excessive amounts of paracetamol, sometimes with the aim of getting them "high". The FAMHP emphasises that paracetamol has no psychotropic effects, even at high doses.

The Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products is reminding of the rules for the proper use of paracetamol and the serious risks associated with overdose, and is emphasising that there are no psychotropic effects associated with taking paracetamol, even at high doses. However, excessive consumption of this medicinal product can have serious effects on health, in particular liver damage that can be life-threatening.

Paracetamol is a medicinal product indicated for the symptomatic treatment of pain and fever. When used in accordance with the recommended dose and interval between doses, paracetamol is a safe and effective medicine. It is important not to exceed the maximum dosage and to respect the four-hour interval between doses.

In case of overdose, call your doctor or pharmacist immediately, or the Poison Control Centre. The Poison Control Centre can be contacted 24 hours a day, free of charge ( +32 070 245 245). If symptoms of overdose occur, please call 112 for immediate medical attention.

The FAMHP is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with hospitals in order to gather as much information as possible on this issue.
