The European Medicines Agency (EMA) published the tenth ESVAC report (European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption) about the sale of antibacterial agents for veterinary use in 2018. Further efforts remain necessary, in Belgium as well.

New downward trend in the consumption of antibiotics in animal husbandry in Belgium

The new BelVet-SAC report which contains an overview of the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine is available. The 2019 results confirm the trends of previous years with consumption down 7.8% for mg of active substance/kg of biomass compared to last year. Compared to the 2011 reference year, the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine has decreased by 40.3%.

As recommended by the Belgian Health Care Knowledge Centre (KCE), a new step in the fight against anti-microbial resistance has been taken: the 2019 edition of the Belgian Antibiotic Policy Coordination Committee (BAPCOC)’s antibiotics guide is available online on the Belgian Pharmacotherapy Information Centre (CBIP) website.
