The new BelVet-SAC report which contains an overview of the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine is available. The 2019 results confirm the trends of previous years with consumption down 7.8% for mg of active substance/kg of biomass compared to last year. Compared to the 2011 reference year, the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine has decreased by 40.3%.

Hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine and Kaletra (lopinavir & ritonavir) are used to treat patients with COVID-19. The FAMHP has quarantined available stocks of these medicines to control their distribution, improve monitoring of their use and limit the risks to patients. Do not take any of these medicines without medical supervision.

Some painkillers (paracetamol, over-the-counter non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetylsalicylic acid) are often used without medical advice for pain and high temperature. To improve proper use of these drugs, the FAMHP is drawing attention to a number of precautionary measures. The FAMHP also reminds holders of marketing authorisations that directives have recently been updated as regards medication containing paracetamol.
The FAMHP launches PharmaStatus, the new online application that collects information about the availability of medicines in Belgium and makes it public. Current information will help patients, doctors, pharmacists and the pharmaceutical industry to limit the impact of unavailable medicines.
