Limited availability of Clamoxyl I.V.-I.M. for injection or infusion: recommendations for hospital pharmacists and specialists

GSK can only produce 40% of the quantity of Clamoxyl I.V.-I.M. required each year because of a shortage of raw materials. The Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP) and the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (RIZIV) are issuing recommendations for hospital pharmacists and hospital-based specialists.

Antibiotic Awareness Week: working together to reduce anti-microbial resistance.

The battle against anti-microbial resistance (AMRI) is one of the greatest challenges for our society according to the World Health Organization. Diseases are transferred from humans to animals and vice versa, so actions must be taken for prevention and fighting AMR in both the human and veterinary sector, and even on the level of the environment. This is why the FAMHP, together with all of the authorities involved, are committed to an inter-sector strategy in the battle against AMR, according to the principle of “One World One Health”.

New ESVAC report: European monitoring of antibiotic use in animals. Reduced usage but Belgium must continue to make efforts

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) published the eighth ESVAC (European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption) report on the sale of antibacterials for veterinary use in 2016.

A new BelVet-Sac report confirms the declining use of antibiotics in livestock farming. Two of the three reduction targets have already been achieved.

The results for 2017 confirm the trends of previous years with a reduced use of -7.4% mg active substance/kg biomass compared to last year. This is the biggest annual drop since 2011. Compared to the reference year 2011 it represents a total decrease of -25.9%.

Off-label use of antibiotics in animals

The Antimicrobials Working Party from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has published an important reflection paper on off-label use and the application of the cascade system for antibiotic therapy in animals.

Using antibiotics in cattle breeding: BelVet-SAC 2016 report

On 30th June 2017 the eighth BelVet-SAC (Belgian Veterinary Surveillance on Antibiotic Consumption) report was published, containing the results of antibiotic use in cattle breeding.

PharmaStatus: a new online application on the availability of medicines

The FAMHP launches PharmaStatus, the new online application that collects information about the availability of medicines in Belgium and makes it public. Current information will help patients, doctors, pharmacists and the pharmaceutical industry to limit the impact of unavailable medicines.

The antimicrobials for veterinary use: vigilance

The indiscriminate and excessive use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine presents a risk to public health and animal health because it promotes the emergence of resistant strains of bacteria. To promote a fair and reasonable use of these medicines and educate veterinary professionals to this problem, the famhp collaborates with the University of Gent to monitor the consumption rates of antibiotics in the veterinary sector based on distribution data. The fourth BelVet-Sac report (Belgian Veterinary Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption) is now available.

Medicines and children: attention, a medicine is not a sweet!

The famhp is launching on 29th April 2013 an awareness campaign, "MEDICINES AND CHILDREN: ATTENTION, A MEDICINE IS NOT A SWEET! " and it offers some tips to help the proper use of medicines in children. On this occasion three brochures to assist the public in determining when and how to give a medicine to a child are being distributed through doctors' and pediatricians’ surgeries, pharmacies and also during ONE and Kind en Gezin consultations. They are also available and downloadable from the website www.médicamentsetenfants.be.
