Famhp & EMA initiatives to support innovative drug development

INTRODUCTION:

As a follow-up action of the workshop in May 2016, the federal agency of medicines and healthcare products (FAMHP) organized a second half-day workshop entitled “FAMHP & EMA initiatives to support innovative drug development: implementation of a National Innovation Office as part of the EU Innovation Network” on Thursday 1/12/2016 in Brussels. The workshop provided an overview of the results from the FAMHP’s national survey which aimed to identify the current and future challenges in R&D as well as the required guidance and support mechanisms for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), academic research centres and affiliated organisations to facilitate and accelerate pharmaceutical innovation and drug development. A draft action plan for the implementation of the National Innovation Office at the FAMHP, elaborated based on the results of the survey, was presented.

In addition, the future role and functioning of the recently formalized European Innovation Network (EU-IN) was explained and a speaker from a well-established national Innovation Office from Spanish national competent authority shared with the audience his current experiences.

Finally, an interactive break-out session was foreseen to fine-tune with the audience the proposed goals and  priorities of the FAMHP’s draft action plan for the implementation of its National Innovation Office in 2017.
